Trenchless methods
Trenchless sewer repair options for Charlotte facilities and utilities
Trenchless is a family of methods, not a single product, and a specifier in Charlotte chooses among them reach by reach. This page compares the no-dig options available for commercial laterals, private and public mains and storm drains, and explains which defects each one addresses.

Trenchless as a decision, not a slogan
On a project in Charlotte, trenchless means choosing the repair that reaches the defect through existing access instead of through the pavement above it. That choice is made for each reach, because a collection system or a campus sewer rarely fails in one way. One segment is cracked and infiltrating but still round; the next has a crown that has fallen in; a third is sound apart from a single fractured joint under a loading dock. The specifier's job is to put the right method on each, and the trenchless family is wide enough to cover most of what a CCTV survey turns up.
The methods, compared
Cured-in-place pipe lining installs a resin-saturated felt or fiberglass tube inside the host, inflates it against the wall and cures it with hot water, steam or ultraviolet light. The result is a structurally independent pipe with no joints, a design life of roughly 50 years and a slight loss of diameter that is more than offset by the smoother wall. It is the workhorse for intact-but-leaking pipe of any size found under Charlotte, from 4-inch laterals to large trunk sewers and storm culverts.
Pipe bursting replaces rather than rehabilitates. A hydraulic or pneumatic head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward while towing a new high-density polyethylene pipe into the void. It requires an entry pit and an exit pit and can increase the diameter by one or two sizes, which makes it the answer for collapsed or undersized runs where a liner would merely preserve the problem.
Sectional point repair places a short sleeve, typically two to six feet of resin-impregnated material on a packer, over one localized defect. It makes sense when the rest of the run is sound and lining the whole reach would be paying for pipe that does not need help.
Spray-applied and cast-in-place linings handle manholes and large non-circular structures, and are part of most municipal programs in Mecklenburg County because manhole chimneys and benches admit so much groundwater.
Reading the footage like a specifier
The survey tells the specifier three things about every segment: whether the host is still a pipe, whether it is on grade, and what is entering it. Cracks, fractures, open joints, infiltration, root intrusion and surface corrosion all say "line it." Collapse, severe deformation, a missing invert or a crown that has dropped say "burst it or dig it." A belly says "measure it," since a liner will not remove a sag and a long one under a Charlotte parking structure may need a short open cut regardless. Isolated defects in an otherwise clean run say "sleeve it." Grease, scale and debris say nothing yet: clean first, then look again.
Downtime, bypass and the building above
The appeal of trenchless to a facility manager or utility in Charlotte is what it leaves alone. Tenants keep trading, patients keep their appointments, traffic keeps moving under a lane closure instead of a detour. Flow is maintained by bypass pumping on mains and by scheduling on laterals, where an overnight cure window is often enough. A typical building lateral is lined in a single shift; a manhole-to-manhole reach is set up, lined and cured in a day with laterals reinstated the same or following day. Pipe bursting on a site main runs one to three days depending on length and the number of connections.
Soil and age in Charlotte
The Piedmont red clay and saprolite under Charlotte swell and shrink with the seasons and hold water after summer storms. Clay tile and cast iron laid in the commercial districts between the 1920s and 1970s have moved with that soil for decades, and the open joints and infiltration the camera finds are the predictable result. Those conditions favor lining: the host pipe is usually still there, the groundwater that would flood an open trench is sealed out by the liner, and the pavement above stays intact.
Specifying the work
Institutional owners should write the method into the specification by reach, reference ASTM standards for liner and installation, and require submittals, cure logs, post-cure CCTV with PACP coding and a written warranty. Project inquiries for this territory are handled through the Environmental Pipe Cleaning, Inc. trenchless services page for Charlotte; the method reference is at the cured-in-place pipe reference and the installer screening criteria at the network's installer screening process. Questions we hear about trenchless sewer repair
Which trenchless method is right for a cracked but intact main in Charlotte?+
Cured-in-place lining. A host pipe that is still round and on grade, even with cracks, open joints, root intrusion or corrosion, is the textbook candidate for a liner. The liner takes over the structural role, seals infiltration and leaves a smooth jointless bore. Bursting is reserved for pipe that has collapsed or needs a larger diameter.
Can trenchless methods handle a line that has lost grade or sagged?+
Only partly. A liner follows the host pipe, so a belly stays a belly after lining, though the smooth wall usually reduces debris buildup there. A short sag may be tolerated; a long or deep one that holds solids is corrected by excavation or, when the whole run is being replaced, by pipe bursting with careful control of the new pipe's line and grade.
How much of a Charlotte property or street is disturbed?+
Lining works from existing manholes and cleanouts, so disturbance is limited to equipment staging and traffic control. Bursting needs an entry pit and an exit pit, each a few feet square, plus small pits at service connections that cannot be reinstated internally. Compared with open-cut replacement under a Mecklenburg County arterial, the pavement, utility conflicts and restoration are a fraction.
Are permits required for trenchless work?+
Yes in most cases. Lateral work requires a plumbing permit, and any work from or within the public right-of-way requires an encroachment or right-of-way permit with traffic control approval. Public owners also carry their own specification and inspection requirements. The installer secures the permits and schedules inspections; the owner receives the permit record at close-out.
How do we get a method recommendation for a specific line?+
Call (877) 955-6399 to arrange a CCTV survey of the reach. Estimates are free. Call now. The survey produces PACP-coded footage, and the proposal that follows assigns a method to each segment with the reasoning, the duration, the bypass approach and the warranty. Estimates are free; call now.
