Pipe bursting for sewer main replacement in Charlotte

When a sewer under a Charlotte property or street has collapsed or is too small for the flow it now carries, lining cannot help and open-cut replacement is costly. Pipe bursting replaces the run with new HDPE through two pits, and this page explains how a specifier decides whether it fits.

Replacement without a trench

Pipe bursting is the trenchless answer to a pipe that lining cannot save. A conical bursting head, driven by a static pulling rod system or a pneumatic hammer, is drawn through the old pipe from an entry pit to an exit pit. It fractures the clay, concrete or cast iron outward into the surrounding soil and pulls a fused string of high-density polyethylene pipe in behind it. When the head reaches the exit pit, the run has a new pipe of equal or larger diameter, with heat-fused joints that are as strong as the pipe wall, and the surface between the pits has not been opened.

The defects that call for it in Charlotte

Commercial districts in Charlotte built in the middle of the last century are reaching the age at which clay tile and cast iron mains do not merely leak but fail structurally. A crown that has dropped into the flow, a segment crushed under a loading area, a line flattened by decades of load in soft fill, or a main that was sized for a smaller city and now surcharges in every summer storm are the cases where a liner would preserve a defect rather than cure it. The CCTV survey and, where the camera cannot pass, a sonar or laser profile establish which reaches have crossed that line.

Upsizing for growth

Rapid suburban development around Charlotte has sent flow into mains that were never designed for it. Bursting is one of the few methods that increases capacity without a trench: the head and expander displace the soil enough to pull in pipe one or two sizes larger. For a utility in Mecklenburg County planning for the next twenty years of connections, that capacity gain is often the deciding factor over lining, which slightly reduces diameter.

Planning the pull

The work begins with a survey to confirm pipe material, length, depth and the position of every service connection, plus a utility locate to find anything within the zone of ground movement. HDPE pipe is fused into a continuous string above ground and laid out along the alignment or coiled where space is tight. Pits are excavated: an entry pit long enough to feed the pipe string at a gentle bend radius and an exit pit at a manhole or the far end of the run. Bypass pumping handles flow on a live main. The pull itself usually takes hours; the full operation on a Charlotte site main, including pits, pull, reconnections and restoration, runs one to three days depending on length and service count.

Soil governs the head. The Piedmont profile under Charlotte, red clay over saprolite, is generally favorable. The clay compresses to accept the displaced fragments and the saprolite yields to the expander, though the transition to harder rock is checked where the alignment is deep. Cast iron hosts need a splitting blade ahead of the expander; ductile iron and previously repaired sections with concrete encasement or point-repair sleeves are identified in advance because they resist fracturing. Bedding gravel from earlier open-cut repairs is noted too, since it can allow the head to wander.

Reconnecting services and restoring the site

Each lateral is reconnected at a small pit with a fused or mechanical saddle onto the new HDPE, then the pit is backfilled and the surface restored. Where a lateral itself is failing, it may be lined or burst in the same mobilization. Pavement cut for pits is restored to the jurisdiction's standard, and the right-of-way permit governs traffic control in the street. Permits for the lateral side are handled with the plumbing authority.

What to specify and what to keep

A specification should name the HDPE resin and dimension ratio, the fusion procedure and operator qualification, the allowable ground movement and the post-installation CCTV requirement. Close-out brings fusion records, the video, service locations and a written warranty. Questions we hear about pipe bursting

When is bursting chosen over lining for a Charlotte main?+

When the host pipe is no longer a usable form: collapsed sections, severe deformation, a crown that has dropped, or a diameter that can no longer pass the flow from growth upstream. A liner needs a host to follow; a bursting head needs only a path. Bursting also replaces a line that has lost grade over its length, provided the new pipe can be pulled at a corrected grade between pits.

Can the new pipe be larger than the old one?+

Yes. Upsizing by one or two nominal diameters is routine and is one of the main reasons municipal owners in Mecklenburg County choose bursting for undersized collection mains. Larger upsizes depend on soil, depth and nearby utilities, because the ground must displace to make room. The survey and a utility locate determine what is realistic.

How many pits, and where do they go?+

At minimum an entry pit, where the new pipe string is fed in, and an exit pit, where the bursting head is retrieved. Service connections are reconnected through small pits at each lateral. On a Charlotte site the pits are placed in landscape areas, parking stalls or at existing manholes wherever possible to limit pavement cutting.

Will bursting disturb nearby utilities or pavement?+

The fractured host pipe displaces into surrounding soil, which produces ground movement that decreases with distance. Utilities within a short radius of the old pipe are located and, where needed, exposed before the pull. In Charlotte's red clay the movement is usually modest, but shallow pipe under thin pavement is assessed carefully. The right-of-way permit covers the traffic control and restoration.

What does the owner receive when the pull is finished?+

A post-installation CCTV of the new HDPE, fusion joint records, the location and depth of each reconnected service, the permit record and a written warranty on the pipe and installation.
