Trenchless methods

Sewer line repair and replacement in Charlotte when lining is not an option

Some defects under Charlotte cannot be fixed from inside the pipe: a collapsed segment at a structure, a long belly under a loading dock, a crushed line beneath new fill. This page covers how a specifier handles the sections that need excavation or replacement and how to keep that work as small as possible.

Where the trenchless methods stop

Lining and bursting cover most of what fails under Charlotte, but not all of it. A liner needs a host pipe with a continuous, roughly circular form; a bursting head needs a path it can be pulled through. When a segment has collapsed and filled with soil, when a pipe is crushed where it enters a manhole or a building wall, when a belly has dropped far enough to hold solids after every use, or when the alignment itself has to change for a new structure, the repair is made from above. The specifier's objective is to make that excavation as short as the defect allows and to hand everything else to trenchless methods.

The failures that reach this page

In the commercial districts of Charlotte built between the 1920s and the 1970s, cast iron and clay mains have been moving with the Piedmont red clay for decades. Shrink-swell cycles and heavy summer storms saturate the soil, and where fill was placed over a line during later development, the pipe below has often sheared or crushed. Connections at manholes and building walls are the usual break points, because the structure stays put while the pipe settles. Bellies form where bedding washed out through an open joint, a process that red clay fines make especially efficient. Concrete storm pipe under heavy truck traffic cracks longitudinally and, once the reinforcing corrodes, loses its crown.

Scoping the dig from the footage

The CCTV survey locates the defect by distance from a known manhole or cleanout, and a sonde on the camera head lets a locator mark the point and depth at the surface. A long sag is measured by the length of standing water in the footage and, where needed, by a laser or sonar profile. With that information the excavation is planned to begin and end on sound pipe, usually a few feet either side of the defect, and the owner knows before the first saw cut what pavement, landscaping or floor slab will be disturbed.

How a spot excavation runs on a Charlotte site

Utilities are located and marked. Pavement or slab is saw-cut and removed. The trench is excavated with shoring, because saturated clay and saprolite do not stand unsupported, and dewatering is set where groundwater is above the invert, which in Mecklenburg County after a wet week is often. Bypass or plugging handles flow on an active main. The failed pipe is removed, bedding is placed and compacted to grade, new pipe is installed with transition couplings to the existing material on each end, and the joint is inspected before backfill. Backfill goes in compacted lifts to prevent the settlement that shows up as a dip in the parking lot a year later. Pavement is restored to the jurisdiction's specification. The exposed work usually takes one to three days; restoration can add more under a public street.

Full replacement and when it is justified

Open-cut replacement of a whole run is the last resort on a developed Charlotte property or in a public street, because it disturbs everything along the alignment and crosses every other utility. It is justified when the line is collapsed over much of its length, when grade must be rebuilt end to end, or when the alignment is being relocated. Even then, pipe bursting is checked first for the straight sections, and open cut is reserved for the parts bursting cannot handle.

The most common outcome for an older Charlotte main is a hybrid: one or two sections are replaced by open cut, and the entire reach, new sections included, is then lined so it has a single jointless wall and one warranty. The excavated section can also serve as a liner access point. Documentation covers the excavation, the materials installed, compaction and restoration, and then the lining records.

Permits, restoration and the record

Work in the right-of-way requires a permit, a traffic control plan and restoration to municipal standards; private-side work requires a plumbing permit and inspection before backfill. The owner should receive the survey, the repair location and depth, materials and coupling records, compaction and restoration documentation, permits and a written warranty. Repair and replacement inquiries for the Charlotte territory go through the Environmental Pipe Cleaning, Inc. sewer repair and replacement page for Charlotte; the method reference is at the cured-in-place pipe reference site, and the installer screening process is at the network's installer verification. Questions we hear about sewer line repair & replacement

When does a Charlotte sewer have to be dug rather than lined or burst?+

When the pipe has no form left for a liner to follow and no path for a bursting head: a collapsed segment packed with soil, a crushed section at a manhole or building connection, a long sag that holds solids, or a point where the alignment must change. In each case the excavation is scoped to the defect, and the rest of the run is handled trenchless.

How is a belly or reverse grade corrected?+

By excavating the sagged length, removing the pipe, rebuilding the bedding to the correct slope and installing new pipe between sound sections. A liner will not change grade, and bursting follows the old alignment unless carefully controlled, so grade correction on a Charlotte line is usually an open-cut task. The survey measures the sag's length and depth before the decision is made.

What is involved in a spot repair under pavement?+

Saw-cutting, excavation with shoring in saturated red clay, dewatering where groundwater is high, removal and replacement of the pipe section with transition couplings, compacted backfill in lifts and pavement restoration to the jurisdiction's standard. In the public right-of-way a permit and traffic control plan are required. A spot repair under a Mecklenburg County street typically takes one to three days including restoration.

Can an excavated repair be combined with lining?+

Yes, and it usually should be. The failed section is replaced by open cut, then the full reach including the new section is lined so the entire run has a continuous jointless wall. That sequence turns a line with one catastrophic defect and many minor ones into a single rehabilitated asset with one warranty.
