Cured-in-place sewer pipe lining in Charlotte
Cured-in-place pipe is the method most Charlotte facility and utility owners end up specifying, because it rebuilds a leaking main from the inside without touching the surface. This page covers what a specifier should know about liner design, cure, bypass and the records that prove the work.

What a liner actually does for a failing main
A cured-in-place liner turns a leaking, jointed, corroded pipe into a continuous new one without removing the old. For an owner in Charlotte that means an end to infiltration through open joints, an end to root entry, a wall that resists grease and hydrogen sulfide far better than concrete or cast iron, and structural capacity that is engineered to the site rather than inherited from whatever was installed sixty years ago. The design life is roughly 50 years, the pipe is jointless from manhole to manhole or cleanout to main, and the surface above it stays as it was.
Where it fits and where it does not
Lining requires a host that is still a pipe. Cracks, fractures, open and offset joints, infiltration, root intrusion, corrosion and loss of crown material short of collapse are all within its range. A fully collapsed segment, a crown that has fallen into the flow, or a long belly that holds solids is not, and those sections are handled by pipe bursting or a short excavation before the liner goes in. A survey that shows a mix of conditions along one Charlotte reach is common, and the proposal should spell out what will be corrected first and what the liner will then cover.
Designing the liner to the reach
Specifications for public and institutional work in Mecklenburg County typically require a liner design in accordance with ASTM standards, with the thickness calculated from the host condition, depth, groundwater and traffic load. The owner's engineer reviews the calculation as part of the submittal, along with the resin type, tube construction and cure method. Polyester resin serves most sanitary sewers; vinyl ester or epoxy is specified where process waste, elevated temperature or aggressive chemistry is involved. That paperwork is not a formality: it is what allows the post-cure field samples to be judged against a stated target.
How the installation runs
The reach is jetted clean and televised. Bypass pumping is set on a main, or a cure window is scheduled on a lateral. The wet-out liner, saturated with resin under vacuum at a facility or on a refrigerated truck, is inverted through the manhole with water or air pressure, or pulled into place and inflated. Heat or ultraviolet light cures the resin while sensors record temperature or UV dose along the length. After cooldown the ends are trimmed and sealed at the manholes, laterals are reinstated by robotic cutter, and the reach is televised again. A building lateral in Charlotte is finished in one working day; a manhole-to-manhole reach takes a day plus reinstatement.
Managing the bypass and the neighbors
On a live main the bypass plan is the part of the job the public notices. Pumps sized to peak flow with standby capacity, suction at the upstream manhole, a discharge line downstream of the work and road plates where it crosses pavement, all monitored around the clock during cure. On a campus or commercial site in Charlotte, the equivalent is a schedule that lines the lateral overnight, with fixture use suspended only during the cure window. Odor from styrene-based resins is noticeable during cure and is managed by ventilation and notification; styrene-free options exist where a hospital or school requires them.
The ground matters too. Red clay over saprolite under Charlotte keeps groundwater against the pipe after every heavy storm, and that groundwater head is a direct input to liner thickness. It also argues for lining over open cut: a trench in saturated clay needs shoring and dewatering, and the restored pavement over it settles. A liner installed from the manholes avoids all of that and seals the joints the groundwater was using.
Closing out and keeping the file
The owner should leave the project with the pre- and post-cure CCTV, PACP-coded reports, the liner design and submittal, cure logs, sample test results, reinstatement records, permits and the written warranty. Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)
How is liner thickness determined for a Charlotte main?+
By calculation from the host pipe's condition, diameter, depth of cover, groundwater head above the invert and live load. A partially deteriorated host that still carries soil load needs a thinner liner than a fully deteriorated one that the liner must replace structurally. The design is part of the submittal, and field samples are cut from the cured liner to verify thickness and flexural properties.
Which cure method is used, and does it matter to the owner?+
Hot water and steam cure felt liners saturated with polyester or vinyl ester resin; ultraviolet light cures fiberglass liners with styrene-free resin options. Steam and UV are faster and release less heated water; water cure handles the largest diameters and thickest liners. The owner should see the cure logs regardless of method, because an incomplete cure is the most common cause of a liner defect.
How are service connections restored after lining a main?+
A robotic cutter travels inside the new liner, locates each lateral from the pre-lining survey and the dimple the connection leaves in the liner, and cuts the opening. Connections are televised afterward. On a Charlotte main with many services, reinstatement runs the same day or the day after the cure, and the bypass stays in place until every connection is open.
Does lining a storm drain differ from lining a sanitary sewer?+
The method is the same; the design often differs. Storm culverts under Charlotte roads are larger, may be non-circular, and frequently must be designed as fully deteriorated because corrugated metal or brick hosts are not counted on. Flow control is by diversion or dry-weather scheduling rather than sanitary bypass pumping, and the liner may be thicker for traffic and earth load.
